I Don’t Know How Long I Can Go On Like This: Reza Jou, slain co-ed’s father

Donna Jou

John Steven Burgess walked out of prison today a free man just 2 years after being sentenced for killing 19-year old Donna Jou. He claims he tossed her body overboard in the Pacific after essentially drugging her to death. She has never been found. A California court sentenced Burgess to 5 years…5 years for killing a woman and dumping her body into the ocean. Reza Jou, Donna’s father still thinks at times she may be alive. Here is a video report from ABC News and an excerpt from the story.

A convicted sex offender who admitted to causing the death of a college student was released from Los Angeles County Jail today after serving half of a five year sentence for involuntary manslaughter.

John Steven Burgess, 41, told police he gave San Diego State University student Donna Jou cocaine, heroin and alcohol and threw her body into the ocean after she overdosed. Despite an extensive search, Jou’s body was never found and the most severe charge authorities could pin on Burgess was involuntary manslaughter.

“It’s an injustice to all of us,” said Lisa Jou, Donna’s older sister. “There is a fatal flaw in the system. You’re almost telling [criminals that] if you can dispose the body and no one can find it, it’s one year, maximum.”

  1. Insane. Too many getting out on plea bargains & technicalities to reoffend. Where’s the justice anymore? What’s up with all the shows glorifying serial killers “Dexter” & these CSI programs that these crazy people watch & learn how to get away with things? What happened to America’s Most Wanted? Seems like the culprits have more rights than the victims anymore. WHAT IS GOING ON? Must be the end of days.
