What Happens in the Mountains of Cragsmoor, Stays in Cragsmoor: Where is Joe Helt?

Joe Helt

Friday night. For most workers, it’s the end of a long work week. For high schoolers, it’s party night. Seventeen-year-old Joe Helt was no different. He looked forward to the parties up at the old Mount Cathalia Lodge just outside of Ellenville, New York where he lived and went to school. The lodge burned had burned down years ago and became a Friday night hot spot for young partiers. January 16, 1987 was no different. With just a hint in the skies foretelling of an epic snowstorm that would hit the area the next day, Joe Helt went to the party. His close friend Jackie Mennella said the last words she heard from Joe that day was “See you there.” She went to the party early but never did see Joe there. Joe showed up later and was with the group of 40 or so kids until the early morning hours of Saturday, January 17. Several theories and rumors take up the story from here.

The 3 Last Seen With Joe Helt Say They Have Nothing To Hide

Three men (then boys or barely men) who were last seen with Joe Helt in 1987 said then they had nothing to hide. Recently when reporters tried to follow-up on this decades old story, they refused to comment. John Laforge and Kelly Diaz who still live in the Ellenville, New York area Joe was from and Wade Marks who moved to Vermont, this is for you…it’s your time and space to tell people what you know, what you don’t know or why people should get off your backs. Here is also an opportunity for those of you in Ellenville who may know something to speak up. Nothing will get deleted here. All I want to know is what you know, whether it’s rumor or fact. With that said, go for it. First time commentators may not see their post immediately. That’s so comments get filtered through a spam checker. Once your first post is published, comments appear immediately.

For Joe Helt, Still Silence From Those Who Know

It was late February when I last wrote about Joe Helt, the then 17-year-old who vanished in the mountains near Ellenville, New York in 1987. There are 3 men who were supposedly with Joe in the hours and minutes before he disappeared. Their stories back then didn’t support each other and yet, nothing was done. Joe is gone. I offered back in February for the 3, John Laforge and Kelly Diaz, both who still live in Ellenville and Wade Marks, who left the area right after Joe disappeared to come here and offer what they know.

Earlier this month, I got an email from a friend of Kelly Diaz who said, “Kelly is like a ‘bro to me.” I asked the writer if he would put me in touch with Kelly so we could talk and get his side of the story out there. He said he would contact Kelly to see “if he even wants to bother.” He closed with, “I know a lot of shit about it too.” I asked him for more details but nearly a month has passed without an answer. Hopefully, soon we’ll know more.

Kelly Diaz Speaks Out-You Aren’t Jessica Fletcher

First off, for those of you who haven’t watched your share of 1980’s TV, Jessica Fletcher is a fictional mystery novelist played by Angela Landsbury on “Murder, She Wrote.” Now that we got that out of the way, here’s why that factoid is of interest. Joe Helt went missing back in 1987 in the mountains near Ellenville, New York. He’s never been found. But speculation on his fate has run rampant in the 25 years since and a lot of it centers on the 3 teens who were last seen with Joe the night he disappeared. Today, in the comments sections of Joe Helt posts, one of them has spoken out. Kelly Diaz, who has been writing under the screen name “Truth” is lashing out at those who suspect he, German Flores and John Laforge had something to do with Joe’s disappearance. Here are some of those comments, unfiltered and uncensored.

A Couple of Clarifications–Joe Helt

Reading through the various comments I just wanted to make a couple of points.

1. I am not taking any sides. I have no idea what happened. I’ve just presented information I’ve been given. It’s up to you to make your own decision as to what everything means.

2. The comments can get dicey. I understand that. If everyone could take a breath and step back, perhaps count to 10 before writing anything, it can be more civil.

3. The person identified as Child Advocate is not from Ellenville. IP checks indicate a different part of the country.

Carry on….

Statutes of Limitations: New York, Mississippi, Illinois

Just for the heck of it, here are some statute of limitations in a few states.

“Statutes of limitations” are laws that set time limits on how long you have to file a “civil” lawsuit, like a personal injury lawsuit, or how long the state has to prosecute someone for committing a crime. These time limits usually depend on the legal claim or crime involved in the case, and they’re different from state to state. For example, in some states you may have three years to file a personal injury lawsuit after you were hurt in a car accident, but in other states you may have two years.
